Arm Lift Surgery (Brachioplasty)

Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty)can be desirable after massive loss of weight or simple aging changes, which may lead to excess skin being present in the upper arms. This skin may also interfere with dressing and full range of motion. Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty), can remove this excess skin and tissue, giving an improved appearance to the arms. This procedure can be combined with liposuction in selected cases to improve the results.

Procedure

The arm lift procedure involves measuring and making the excess skin on the arms. the length of the planned scar is dictated by the extent and distribution of excess skin. The scar is planned to be on the inside aspect of the arm, however, it is difficult to hide the scar and this may be visible during social interaction.
Once the plan is made, under aneasthesia, the excess skin is removed. The surgeon may also carry out liposuction in some selected cases.
The wounds are then closed, usually using disolving stiches. After dressings are applied, a compression garmant is used and usuallly need to be worn for 6 weeks.

Risks and potential complications

Bleeding, bruising, swelling and a scar along the inside of the arm can be expected after arm lift surgery.
Risks include haematoma, lumpy or wide scars, infection, loss of skin sensation, dog ears, skin loss and wound break down, contour deformity (telephone deformity), DVT and PE.

After care

As all of your care is directly with a consultant plastic surgeon, all your after care is directly with or under supervision of your consultant.
Following your arm lift surgery, you will be given detailed instructions about care you need to exercise. You will have the ability to get in touch with us any time, day or night should the need arise.
We operate a comprehensive aftercare policy, and you will be followed up until you are fully healed. In case there is a complication which is directly the result of your surgery, we will provide treatment, where possible, free of cost to you for up to a year after your surgery

Arm lift surgery is a procedure which requires very careful consideration on the part of the patient and there is no substitute for a detailed consultation to avoid disappointment. Minor degrees of skin laxity may be treated successfully with non surgical treatment like Thermage.

All surgical procedures carry certain risks and there are limitations of what can be achieved. A full and frank discussion with the surgeon is the only way to gain a clear insight into the procedure and allow you to make an informed decision about your surgery.
